Seaward tells the stories of Captain William Kelly (1811–1877) and his brother, Captain John Kelly (1816–1860), from Antrim, Northern Ireland. The book is a richly annotated, sourced, and indexed biographical and historical memoir encompassing the 1848 migration of Europeans to North America, the Irish potato famine, the Australian gold rush, and the controversial transportation of indentured Indian laborers to the West Indies. Seaward recounts the notorious 1871 murder of William Kelly’s brother-in-law during the Reconstruction Era in New Orleans. The book also addresses another extraordinary, headline-grabbing homicide involving the crew of a ship owned by William Kelly, as well as John Kelly's final reckoning with an Indian Ocean hurricane.
